3 WAYS TO BENEFIT FROM NEW ICAO ANNEX 14 AMENDMENT
The latest Amendment No. 14 to ICAO Annex is definitely impacting airport planning and design: shoulders, runway widths and taxiways widths will be narrower. According to the Amendment, Code F new runway width will measure 45 m – before it was 60 m – so that 25% net saving on load bearing pavements will be there. At the same time, Code F taxiways reduced from 25 m to 23 m, and shoulders from 17.5 m to 10.5 m.
In addition to the new runways and taxiways investment savings, Airport Authorities will spare approximately 1% on their annual maintenance costs.
There is no doubt that such amendments cannot be ignored and will definitely facilitate Government Institutions and Airport Authorities decision to build new airport infrastructures and modify ongoing projects. The massive reduction on pavements can be seen as a saving or, alternatively, as a great opportunity to enhance other facilities with the saved amounts.
